MONTPELLIER ANGLOPHONE/AMERICAN LIBRARY
New "support group" founded
This letter is to invite you to join the Support Group of a new Montpellier association.
Joining the Support Group will cost you nothing other than your moral support, but it will enable you to stay informed of actions taken to save Montpellier’s American Library and of planned activities to provide alternate access to books and other media in English.
Here is the background to this initiative.
As you will know the American Library of Montpellier was closed on 1st January this year, following a decision taken by the governing board of Paul Valéry University.
Since the decision was made public many people have been involved in moves to “save the American Library” - these have included members of the English speaking community of greater Montpellier, relevant associations and people active in the former Friends of the American Library Association.
An informal, ad hoc group was formed to protest at the closure and to save the library’s prime asset – 30,000 books – from being sold, destroyed or purloined. This group organized a petition to contest the closure and this attracted 1500 signatures. Individuals spearheading this group have held meetings with the President of Paul Valéry University, Anne Fraïsse and with relevant officials in the Montpellier’s office of the mayor. and made contact with the region’s President, Georges Fraiche.
Unfortunately, the ad hoc group has had limited effect to date:
<> It has not yet persuaded Paul Valéry University to reverse its decision.
<> It has saved the book collection, so far – in the sense that the collection remains in the Richter building, untouched.
<> It has been told that the municipality will/might find a home for the collection in the city’s Emile Zola library, on a temporary basis, but decisions have not been reached.
<> It has been told that in 2014 the collection could be housed in the new Tolstoy Médiathèque.
The ad hoc group has now registered with Montpellier’s Préfecture a new association – Friends of the Anglophone Library – to press for an acceptable solution to the Paul Valéry “shut out” and to explore alternate means to provide access to books and other media in English.
From September onwards the new association – known by its acronym, new FOAL – will hit its stride with new, vigorous initiatives and with proposals for specific cultural activities. If you join the Support Group you add your “clout” to new FOAL’s endeavors.
